(Rules for Sacrifice)

Bible Story Summary:

  • God told Moses what to do when the people sinned.

Christ Connection:
The Book of Leviticus is about the sacrifices God told His people to offer for sin. God wanted to show the Israelites that He was going to forgive people. God sent His Son, Jesus, to be the perfect sacrifice. Jesus forgives our sin once and for all.

Big Picture Question:
What is worship? Worship is celebrating the greatness of God.

Story Point:
God made ways to forgive His people.

Big Ideas:

  • God gave His people rules for worshiping Him.

  • People brought gifts to God every year.

  • God sent Jesus to earth because He loves us.

Family Discussion Starters:

  • Define sin as going against God and His commands. Talk with preschoolers about ways you sin and they sin.

  • Who is our perfect sacrifice for sin?

  • Who can we go to for forgiveness when we sin? How did Jesus make a way for us to be forgiven?

Family Activities:

  • Flip through the Book of Leviticus together reading and talking about some of the laws. Discuss how hard keeping those laws would be.

  • Find a local petting zoo or a farm where you can feed goats. Talk about how the scape goat is fulfilled in Jesus. See Leviticus 16:20-22.


Younger Kids

  • Some offerings were used to praise God and others to cover sin.

  • What happened to the two goats on the Day of Atonement?

  • Why don’t Christians still offer sacrifices?

  • Who is our perfect sacrifice forever?

Family Activities:

  • Visit a petting zoo that has goats and lambs. See if you can find ones without spots or blemishes. Talk to your kids about the wonderful news that we don’t need to offer animal sacrifices, because Jesus is our perfect sacrifice forever!

  • Discuss what it means to sacrifice, and give your kids a chance to give up something to help others.
