(Moses Was born and called)

Exodus 1-4

Preschool

Bible Story Summary:

  • God saved Moses’ life as a baby.

  • God spoke to Moses through a burning bush.

  • God chose Moses to save His people.

Key Passage:
Hosea 13:4b

Christ Connection:
God saved Moses’ life so Moses could grow up and save God’s people from the Egyptian king. God used His Son, Jesus, to save people in an even better way. God sent Jesus to earth, and Jesus gave up His life to save us from our sin.

Big Picture Question:
Is there anything God cannot do? God can do all things.

Story Point:
God chose Moses to save His people.

Big Ideas:

  • God kept baby Moses safe.

  • God chose Moses to bring His people out of Egypt.

  • God chose Jesus to rescue us from sin.

Family Discussion Starters:

  • What would you do if you found a baby alone in a basket?

  • How do we know God heard His people’s cries for help? Who can we cry out to when we need help?

  • What does God’s name, “I AM WHO I AM” mean? Read John 8:58. Talk about how Jesus is God the Son.

Family Activities:

  • Prepare a meal or donate clothes to a family celebrating the birth of a baby or an adoption.

  • Take a walk outside. Stop at a bush. Imagine what it would be like to see the bush on fire but not burning up.

Younger Kids

Bible Story Summary:

  • A new Pharaoh feared the size of the Israelite’s growing families.

  • Pharaoh began killing Israelite baby boys, but Moses’ mother hid him.

  • Moses grew up in Egypt, but later fled to Midian.

  • God called Moses to deliver His people from captivity.

Key Passage:
Hosea 13:4

Story Point:
God called Moses to deliver His people from captivity.

Big Picture Question:
Is there anything God cannot do? God can do all things according to His character.

Christ Connection:
God saved Moses’ life and called him to rescue God’s people from slavery. The calling of Moses points to a greater calling and rescue — the call of Jesus to come to earth to save God’s people. Jesus gave up His life to save us from slavery to sin.

Family Discussion Starters:

  • Why do you think Moses was afraid to obey God at first?

  • What does God’s name, “I AM WHO I AM” mean?

  • How can we know what God wants us to do?

Family Activity:
Use the Internet to research different ways to waterproof materials. Work together as a family to waterproof winter clothing, and discuss what Moses’ mother did to protect his basket.
